Heat pump for swimming pool

A pool heat pump is a device that extracts heat energy from the environment and transfers it to the pool water. Thanks to the special design and material of the heat exchanger, pool water is heated without the use of a heat exchanger. This solution allows to increase the efficiency of the pool water heating system.

The principle of operation of the heat pump

The principle of operation of a pool heat pump does not differ from that of a classic air / water heat pump. Inside the heat pump there is an evaporator, which heats the refrigerant from the dissipated heat of the environment. After heating in the evaporator, it boils and turns into a gaseous state. In the compressor, the gas is compressed and heated. In a special heat exchanger (condenser), the heated gas transfers heat to the pool water. The refrigerant then passes through a throttle (expansion valve), where its pressure is reduced to its original state. The refrigerant then returns to the evaporator. The circuit closes and the process repeats.

Heat pumps for pool water heating

Heat pumps for pool water heating are designed for seasonal operation. When significant cold weather sets in, it is necessary to prepare for the winter period: drain the water from the heat exchanger of the heat pump and the pool, rinse the equipment, cover the pool, and, if necessary, dismantle the heat pump and store it in a dry room.

What is a heat pump controller?

The heat pump controller will allow you to automatically control the operation of the circulation pump and the pool filtration system. With the help of the controller, you can control the temperature of heating or cooling the pool water and set the schedule of the heat pump during the day and even a week, which will allow you to use the heating or cooling of the pool water only when necessary and save energy the rest of the time.

Characteristics of the heat pump for the pool

  • Heat output
  • Capacity
  • Single-phase or three-phase design
  • Efficiency of the COP
  • Noise characteristics
  • Weight and size characteristics
  • Maximum volume of pool heating (indicated by the manufacturer, based on average parameters)

Heat loss from the mirror of outdoor swimming pools (May-September):

A preliminary selection of the heat pump can be made on the basis of the summary table:
Level of protection of the pool Water temperature
20℃ 24℃ 28℃
  With a coating 100W/m2 150W/m2 200W/m2
  Uncoated, windproof 200W/m2 400W/m2 600W/m2
  Uncoated, partially windproof 300W/m2 500W/m2 700W/m2
Uncoated, not protected (strong winds) 450W/m2 800W/m2 1000W/m2

Advantages of heat pumps for the pool

  • High efficiency (COP), which can reach 6.6
  • The minimum amount of additional equipment (often enough existing pump of the pool filtration system)
  • Ability to both heat and cool the pool water
  • Ease of installation
  • Low noise level

The cost of heat pumps for pool heating

The price of heat pumps for pool water heating depends on the capacity and manufacturer. Our experts will perform a calculation that takes into account all the heat energy losses through the mirror and the pool bowl. At RENECO, you can buy a heat pump for a swimming pool and order a qualified selection and installation of a heat pump for a swimming pool.
